Course: Introduction to GRASS GIS 7

The new GRASS GIS Version 7 is gaining an enormous interest due to its impressive features. This course introduces the participants to GRASS GIS in general while starting right away with the new version.

Course objectives
In this course the participants will learn how to start with the Open Source software GRASS GIS 7 which has been released in 2015. While focusing on GRASS GIS 7, we will also show how to access GRASS’ functionality using QGIS. In more detail, we cover the following topics:

    • introduction to OSGeo, GRASS GIS 7, where to find help
    • software installation, course data usage
    • QGIS Processing interaction with GRASS GIS
    • map import and GRASS GIS location creation
    • visualization of vector and raster maps, scalebar, symbols, grids, color tables, histograms
    • terrain analysis
    • rescaling, reclassification, NULL data
    • metadata management
    • map reprojection
    • vector data analysis: extraction, intersection, union, dissolve, distance, generalization, digitizing
    • attribute management: database backends, attribute selection (simple and SQL), updating database records, table join
    • geodata export

Prerequisites
Own laptop (Linux, MS-Windows, Mac OSX are fine). Please note that most operating systems require that the participant has administrator rights on their laptop, hence please prepare for that.
Software: GRASS GIS 7.0.4 or later

About the trainer
The trainer, Dr. Markus Neteler, is a core member of the GRASS GIS development team and successfully offering GRASS GIS courses for more than a decade.

Terms and conditions
In order to offer optimal learning conditions, our training takes place with a maximum of 10 participants. The course will take place with a minimum of 5 participants.
Duration: 3 days (9:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00)
Fees: 990 € + VAT which includes the course information, snacks and beverages. Students and job seekers may take advantage of discounted rates (we offer one seat with reduced fees per course).
Each participant receives a certificate upon successful completion of the respective course.
We can assist with finding an accommodation if needed.

Section 1. Registration and booking
A participant may register for a course by e-mail. Only a written application shall be recognized as binding upon our confirmation. The registration deadline is 8 calendar days before the start of training. The customer will receive a confirmation and further instructions including the bank transfer details for the payment. For the course registration, the temporal order of receipt applies.

Section 2. Billing / Payment
The invoice will be issued upon receipt of order as soon as the minimum number of participants of the training is reached (see above) and the training definitely takes place. The invoice amount is due immediately, the payment must be completed before the start of the course without deductions within 14 days after receipt of invoice.

Section 3. Equipment
Unless agreed upon otherwise, the participants bring their own laptop and use it during the training.

Section 4. Training structure
Our courses start at 9:30 and end at around 17:00. We use the current stable software version in our training sessions which are instructor-led with many hands-on exercises.
Lunch breaks: Given the optimal location round the conference room, there are many options for having lunch in a few minutes walking distance.

Section 5. Cancellation
In case that a participant cannot take part in an already booked course, s/he may cancel it free of charge up to 10 working days before the course starts. If case of communication of cancellation less than 10 working days before the course, 50% of the fee will be charged. The aforementioned condition shall not apply except the customer provides another paying participant. In case of no show at the booked training course, the full course fee is charged.
The trainer reserves the right of cancellation for organizational reasons.

Section 6. Canceled training / Liability
In case of canceled training due to sudden illness of the trainer, force majeure, due to failure to achieve the minimum number of participants, or other unpredictable events, no entitlement to the realization of the training exists. No liability is assumed for indirect damages, especially lost profit or third-party claims. The trainer is not liable for existing travel and / or accommodation costs and loss of working hours in such cases. However, the participant will be notified in case of failure of options to participate in the training for an alternate date.
