actinia workshop for GFOSS and GEAM
As part of the agreement between the Italian Association for Free Geographic Information (GFOSS.it) and the Italian Association for Geo-resources and Environment (GEAM), we hosted a workshop on actinia on 12 March 2021 with almost 50 participants. In this course we briefly presented some basics on geospatial and EO data and gave an introduction to the REST API and cloud processing concepts. The main part of the workshop was an introduction to geo- and EO-processing with actinia, flanked by hands-on exercises to become more familiar with the topic of geoprocessing in the cloud.

About actinia
With the rapidly growing abundance of Earth observation and geospatial data, the need for scalable geoprocessing solutions is also growing. Following the paradigm of bringing the algorithms to the data, we have developed the cloud-based geoprocessing platform actinia (https://actinia.mundialis.de and https://github.com/mundialis/actinia_core). This free and open source solution is capable of processing and analysing large amounts of data. actinia provides an HTTP REST API around GRASS GIS functionality, extended with ESA SNAP and user scripts written in Python. The core functionality includes processing of raster and vector data as well as time series of satellite imagery. The backend is connected to the Landsat and Copernicus Sentinel archives. Since 2019, actinia is an OSGeo community project and also a backend of the openEO.org API (EU H2020 project).
