What Satellites Can Tell Us About Our Past – Join Our Webinar

We warmly invite you to our webinar, “What Satellites Reveal About Our Past: Earth Observation Data as a Tool for Heritage Conservation and Historical Research,” taking place on 25 June 2026 from 10:30 to 11:15 a.m.

What it’s about:

Cultural heritage sites are facing growing challenges from urbanization, land-use change, and increasing environmental risks such as erosion and water scarcity.

Earth observation data can make a crucial contribution in two ways:

Historical satellite imagery from the Keyhole program (1960–1972) enables researchers to track long-term changes in landscapes, uncover vanished structures, and identify archaeological sites that may no longer be visible today.

Complementing this approach, BioDivER enables the automated monitoring of environmental parameters in the vicinity of cultural heritage sites. Changes are analyzed using time-series data and compiled into reports. These reports can be readily used by decision-makers, UNESCO bodies, and local authorities, even without expertise in geospatial data analysis.

Topics

  • The Keyhole Program and Its Data: Origins, Availability, and Key Characteristics
  • Processing and Orthorectification of Historical CORONA Satellite Imagery
  • BioDivER: Monitoring Environmental Parameters at Cultural Heritage Sites
  • Automated Time-Series Analysis and Reporting for Risk Management and Heritage Conservation

Registration

The webinar is free of charge and will be held online. Please register by 23 June by emailing webinar@mundialis.de with the subject line “[Anmeldung Webseminar Denkmalschutz & historische Forschung]”. The access link will be sent upon successful registration. We look forward to your participation!
