Open Source GIS

What it is…

Generally spoken Open Source refers to a software of which the source code is available to the general public for use and/or modification freely. Great projects can develop, when people are able to use and adapt a software to their needs and give the results back to the project. As an example, much of the Internet is fueled by open source software!
GIS is the abbreviation for Geographic Information System and describes software, that can process data with a spatial context. Most information is located in space and GIS helps to store and analyse geospatial information.

What we do with it…

The mundialis software stack includes:

  • GRASS GIS
is a software suite used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics and map production, spatial modelling, and visualization. We use it to process Earth observation data and to extract information from that. We also do GRASS GIS development and offer training courses.
  • GeoServer
is a “software server that allows users to view and edit geospatial data. Using open standards set forth by the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), GeoServer allows for great flexibility in map creation and data sharing“. We use it to publish our processed data to the web by using the mentioned open standards.
  • SHOGun
is a middleware between server and client and consists of Java Spring, Hibernate, OpenLayers, GeoExt and more. It comes with a lot of functionality to manage multiple WebGIS Applications. We use it to make it easy for our customers to manage their Web Applications and user administration.
  • BasiGX
“is an ExtJS package used to create modern GIS-Applications based on ExtJS 6, GeoExt3 and OpenLayers 3. It consists of multiple components that help the developer to put together a customized app quickly“. We use it to create our Web Map Applications.
